Sgian Dubh Blades
I make my Sgian Dubhs with a number of different blade options and can also supply these blades to you seperately or in kit form through our web shop here.
We offer a range of affordable and high quality blade options as detailed below:
The 2 blades on the left are standard imported blades which are a good option for most Sgian Dubhs.
The 3 blades on the right are examples of what we think are probably the best Sgian Dubh blades available off-the-shelf.
Working with one of Sheffield’s oldest knife-making companies, these premium blades have been exclusively made to our own design and use only top grade steels, grinding, heat treatment and finishing.
Our design results from many years of making sgian Dubhs and, for example features a gentle radius between blade and tang for extra strength and are precision ground from thicker steel than typical blades.

Swedish Steel
The use of Swedish steel in Scottish industry has a long tradition.
During the mid seventeenth century, metallurgical entrepreneurs like David, James and Henry Lyall moved to Sweden where they both traded and produced quantities of Swedish iron. This was bought and shipped back to Scotland as finished weapons during such episodes as the Covenanting Wars by Gothenburg-based Scots such as John Maclean between 1639-1651.
More interestingly was the import from Sweden of metals for the use by indigenous Scottish producers. Archival sources reveal that many cargoes were shipped to be turned into weapons by Scots who had honed their art in Swedish foundries. The most famous of these was General Alexander (Dear Sandy) Hamilton, who established his Edinburgh foundry and canon factory along the same lines as those he developed in Arboga in the 1630s. The involvement of Scots with the Swedish metal industry continued when Ingrid Boij, the daughter of a Scottish immigrant, established her Hammer Forge at Grangshammar in Dalarna in the late 1600s.
On a smaller scale I seek to continue this tradition by producing premium quality Sgian Dubhs by offering blades made from the finest quality Swedish steel.
We
recently visited the Damasteel foundry in Söderfors, (some photos below) and are importing their high grade steels. See the 'Damasteel' website for more information.
